Addis translates, in Ethiopian, to new. The name of the restaurant connects to its mission of spreading flavors and culture to a new city, as Addis Nola means “New Nola.” The food isn’t classic New Orleans food. It isn’t creole or cajun.

The beautiful, colorful spot from owners Dr. Biruk Alemayehu, Prince Lobo, and chef Jaimito “Jaime” Lobo offer warming stews; sambusas and kitfo; and whole fried red snapper. I ordered Chicken Tibs that first visit, and just finished last night's Beef Tibs this afternoon. The one time I ate at Addis Nola, it was delicious but so spicy I couldn't eat enough of it to really get full. I like Sammy's even better, because all the wonderful Ethiopian flavors are there, but without the oppressive heat.
